Ethan Allen Shelf Redo

While visiting my mom last weekend, I managed to leave with her vintage 70's Ethan Allen shelf that matches her dining room set.  I asked her about 50 times if she was absolutely sure that I could have it, and told her it will never be the same after I'm done with it, but she still let me take it!  Here's was it looked like before I came along:

Ethan Allen is known for high quality furniture, so I knew this shelf would be great with a little paint.  I took my off-white Caromal Colours RECLAIM to it.  I mushed on two coats of the paint, then lightly sanded with 120 grit paper to add a little distress.

And here it is waiting for Josh to hang it up:

I love how distressing covers up all my painting mistakes!

It's great piece that I will hopefully get another 35 years out of!  Thanks Mom!

  1. I think a lot of 70's Ethan Allen pieces are being painted and distressed these days ...

The dark chunky wood look is so, well, 1970's!

  2. Hi, Jamie

I love your shelf. I am so happy that your mom gave it to you. My mom just gave me her vintage fork and spoon and I gave them a makeover. I found your lovely blog on I gotta create link party. I enjoyed looking around and I am a new follower. I would love for you to stop by www.homesweetbutterfly.com. Have a great week.

  3. You did an awesome job on the shelf. I love giving old things a new life, especially when they are well made like things from Ethan Allen. Thanks for stopping by. I have thought about stenciling, but I think the wallpaper will bring much more color than me stenciling.
